Explore more about this VELOWAVE RANGER FMTB3 Fat Tire Electric Bike in our in-depth review that is here to help you with your final decision.

For starters, this fat-tire e-bike comes neatly packed in a large carton box with a thick layer of protective foam. You can see excellent attention to detail by the manufacturer because all components have zip ties on them. Thus, you’ll need a pair of nippers for unpacking. Also, you’ll find plastic guards on levers and even protective wrap on multiple elements.

The bike that sits inside has a disconnected front wheel, battery, and handlebar. For faster assembly, you’ll get an accessory box that also contains pedals, a 2.0A charger, a front skewer, a front headlight, and user-friendly instructions.

Even if you’ve never done bike assembly, it will take only 5 to 10 minutes. As a result, you’ll get a good-looking model with a simple design and intuitive controls and electronics.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the specs and features.

The clean-looking eye-catching frame is available in black and silver colors. It has a massive appearance and is much bigger compared to models in the same price category.

Since it is a full-size frame, you can enjoy a relaxed riding position. On top of that, there is plenty of room for different accessories like water bottle holders or bags.

It can hold up to 300 pounds, while also being very durable thanks to the aluminum construction. However, the total weight of the bike and electronics is 74 pounds, which is a bit heavier than some might expect.

If you are looking for better off-road performance, Kenda fat tires with a 4” width are a fantastic option. Due to the 26” diameter, they dampen the road vibration well while allowing you to maintain maximum control on gravel and rocky terrain.

As for the quick daily rides around your neighborhood, they also work great, giving you a smooth experience.

Even if you reach higher speed on this bike, the hydraulic disk brakes will do their best to keep the braking distance as minimum as possible. The combination of front and rear contours with large disks’ sizes is very helpful in different situations. This should be more than enough for both street riding and off-road.

The front hydraulic fork is adjustable so you can switch between maximum stability and softness within seconds. With a click of a lockout dial, this makes this model suitable for roads. Also, you can reduce the preload stiffness for rough terrains.

Although there is no rear suspension, you probably won’t even notice the difference because of fat tires. All in all, this does feel a bit bulkier than a regular bike, but it outmatches it when it comes to riding off the trail.

With a Shimano 7-speed drivetrain, this e-bike accelerates quickly and can reach more than 28 mph by pedal. It can also deal with different terrains at higher speeds easily. The lower speeds make it possible to climb anywhere you want effortlessly.

The bike allows you to choose between throttle-only, pedal-assist, and pedal-only modes for better versatility. The built-in cadence sensor increases the torque according to how hard you pedal.

Battery and electronics

The 48V 15Ah waterproof battery feels pretty large and heavy compared to competitors. The good news is it is incredibly powerful and can be locked with a key for security.

On your left side, you’ll get throttle control and a small display that you can reach with a thumb. The latter shows battery charge, your current speed, mileage, selected pedal-assist level, and has an additional menu for trip info and time. The speed controls have markings on them and are user-friendly.

Per full charge, the bike can travel 25 miles with full-throttle only, max assist level, and 48V 10W LED headlight on. If you decide to help the motor, the distance can be easily extended to 40 miles or even more.

The heart of this beast is a BAFANG geared hub motor. With the 750 watts of power and 80NM torque, it makes it possible to accelerate faster and get through many obstacles like rocks and hills effortlessly. Its top speed is limited to 20 mph with pedal assist, but it is more than enough for comfortable rides. While it does add some weight to the construction, you’ll get an optimal amount of power and a quick response in return.

The wide ergonomic seat allows riders to travel farther distances while providing proper weight distribution. It has plenty of space beneath it for a bike pack, so you’ll always have your tools and useful accessories at hand. According to your height, you can adjust the 13.7-inch post.

Unfortunately, it lacks extra suspension that you can get with pricier models. Still, it can be easily replaced if need be.

Who is this bike for?

This fat-tire bike is created for both hill climbing and street cruising. With just one dial click, you can switch from squishy suspension to rigid and back and have fun on different types of terrain. For improved security, it comes with large hydraulic disk brakes. The full-size frame is optimal for 5'6" to 6'2" riders and offers plenty of space for accessories and bags.

If you are looking for a pleasant riding experience anywhere you want at 20 mph without even having to pedal, you can use it as an electric motorcycle with a throttle-only mode. On top of that, it has a pleasant and clean look.

Many regular bikes in this price range are packed LCD screens that have more functions and also rear and seat post suspension. Nevertheless, they can hardly achieve these off-road results and softness.

If you compare this to other fat-tire bikes, you can see that it is a more budget-friendly model that still shows impressive results on all types of terrain.

When fully charged, it can go up to 40 miles with pedal assist despite the road surface you chose. The battery anti-theft lock, informative display, and included headlight make it very practical for daily use.

The strict appearance and a large number of useful components make the VELOWAVE RANGER FMTB3 a great competitor to pricier fat-tire options. The motor boasts a decent torque and power output here, while various pedaling modes give you freedom when it comes to your riding style. Both motor and brakes are responsive, giving you better control.

This bike comes ready for your off-road trips and street riding, and all you have to do is to add some bags and a bottle holder to it. Neither assembly, nor electronics are hard for beginners, and it offers optimal softness even without a rear suspension.
